Wednesday was sunny and a fine winter day. The precipitation for December was 1.51 inches, the average for December is 5.24 inches. The precipitation for the year was 92.68 inches, the average for the year is 62.28 inches, leaving a surplus of 30.40 inches for the year. Hundreds of protesters storm ed the Russian embassey in Tehran, Iran Tuesday as anger mounted over Soviet military buildup in Afghanistan. There are reports of battles between the Russian troops and Moslem insurgents and dissident Afghan army soldiers. An earthquake, registering 7.0 on the Richter scale hit Portugal’s Azores Islands in the mid-Atlantic Tuesday, crumbling buildings and killing at least 26 people. Fire roared through a crowded social club at Chapais, Quebec, at a New Year’s Eve party, killing at lease 41 people in one of Canada’s worst fire tragedies. C. 28782 Opens Office In Columbus Roy W. Johnson, Licensed Public Accountant, of Saluda has purchased the Denton Account ing Service in Columbus, from the George Denton family. The Denton Accounting Service will continue to operate in the Horne Realty office. Mr. John son, a former Polk County Accountant, has 11 years experi ence in the accounting business. He is married to the former Diana Henderson of Rt. 1, Tryon and they have two children, David and Rebecca. Judson Woodruff Has Retired Judson Woodruff has retired from Community Cash in Landrum. Mr. Woodruff would have 40 years service with Community Cash in May of this year. He served as manager of the Landrum store for a number of years until he decided to step down as manager and remained as assistant manager. Mr. Woodruff has retired, but he intends to come back occasionally and help them out. Miss Wanda Campbell has returned to Greenwood, S. C. after visitng her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Campbell, Sr. of Landrum. Miss Campbell is associated with Meyers-Arnold at Cross Creek Mall in Greenwood and recently taught a course on Fashion Merchandising. THURSDAY, JAN. 3, 1980 ’69 Reunion The Tryon High School Senior Class of 1969 held its 10th reunion Saturday at Caro-Mi. Twenty members of the class and their spouses remembered old times, and following the dinner at Caro-Mi continued their party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Pleasants (Hilda Story). The member coming the farthest was Danny Daniel of Waco, Texas. One member, Kim Hefner and his wife of Marietta, S. C. were parents of a newly arrived daughter and couldn’t come. Two members planning to attend, but couldn’t due to illness were Gloria Fincher Scruggs of Chesnee, S. C. and Carolyn Weaver Littlefield of Landrum. The senior sponsors, Mrs. C. A. West and Mrs. H. L. Rawlins, both of Tryon were guests of the class. Price 10c Per Copy Tax Forms “Hotline” Available to Tar Heels Greensboro — These days few things are free, but the Internal Revenue Service is offering a free telephone line to North Carolina taxpayers who need additional forms and publications to help file Federal tax returns. It’s as simple as dialing your area access code (1, for example), then 800-241-3860. This is a direct line to the Forms Distribution Center, not for answers to tax questions. Not only are the additional forms and publications fee, but are mailed postage-free. If a telephone isn’t available, use the order blank in the tax forms package received in the mail and send it to the Forms Distribution Center. Either way, the order will be given prompt attention. DEDICATION SERVICE AT PACOLET BAPTIST There will be a dedication service Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Pacolet Baptist Church of the new pulpit furniture and other items purchased from the Clarence Rhodes Memorial Fund. Rev. Landis Cannady stated that the public is invited. Local Carolina fans who attended the Gator Bowl game and saw UNC defeat Michigan 17 to 15 were Carl Meroney, Bart Meroney, Geir Olsen, Doug Brannon and Paul T. Smith.
